Is train travel available inside Mønsted Kalkgruber?

It is no longer possible to ride the mine train inside Mønsted Kalkgruber. The characteristic yellow mine train, which historically transported limestone out of the tunnels and later carried visitors, was permanently decommissioned for technical and safety reasons. This decommissioning occurred during extensive renovations and modernizations carried out from 2016 onward; consequently, all underground navigation today is conducted on foot. The passage systems have instead been optimized with wide, level concrete pathways, making exploring the mines independently and at a personal pace accessible and straightforward.

What opportunities exist to meet a guide in the mines?

Although train rides are no longer offered, the facility provides comprehensive oral interpretation and educational outreach. Every day during opening hours, visitors can meet professional site guides at designated, fixed location spots both above and below ground. Rather than traditional continuous guided tours, these interactions consist of short, precise historical presentations lasting 10–15 minutes, which are entirely free of charge upon paying general admission. The educational schedule follows fixed times and can be accessed on the official website.

Is it possible to book a private tour or a school visit?

For organized groups and educational institutions, private, exclusive guided tours with a personal guide can be booked during the opening season. These guided tours must be reserved in advance via email and take place on weekdays outside school holidays and public holidays. The specific frameworks for guided sessions are categorized as follows:

  • School visits with a guide: This program has a duration of 45 minutes and is tailored for primary schools, lower secondary schools, continuation schools (efterskoler), and upper secondary educational institutions. A maximum cap of 28 students and 2 teachers per guide is strictly maintained.
  • Private groups with a guide: This session extends over 1 hour, providing an in-depth review of the local geology and history, with a maximum capacity of 20 participants per group.
  • Lime Plant concerts: As a unique auditory experience, groups of a minimum of 20 people can book an exclusive flute concert lasting 30–40 minutes within the distinct acoustic settings of the historic Lime Plant (Kalkværket).

What other educational activities are available on-site?

Mønsted Kalkgruber features a wide array of interactive and visual experiences above ground that complement the underground visit and illuminate the raw industrial history up to the site's closure in 1980:

  • The historic Lime Plant (Kalkværket): Visitors can listen to 7 specialized audio stations that bring the past to life, explore a detailed scale model room depicting the historical daily routine of the village, or allow children to paint with authentic lime on a large chalkboard.
  • The nature trail and sinkholes: A marked route leading through the protected Natura 2000 area takes visitors past deep sinkholes and vantage points overlooking the former open-pit limestone quarry, which has now transformed into a lake.
  • Digital interpretation: Via the USEEUM mobile application, visitors can download the dilemma game "The Battle for Dynamite" (Kampen om Dynamitten), which guides players through the historical conflict surrounding the introduction of explosives in the mine.
  • Exhibitions and play areas: The welcome center houses an artistic bat exhibition, and an outdoor themed playground allows children to climb on large wooden models representing the five hibernating bat species found on-site.
