Where can visitors park when visiting Mønsted Kalkgruber?
Mønsted Kalkgruber features an extensive, complimentary parking area designed to accommodate visitors arriving by car as well as large tour buses. The primary parking facility is accessed via Kalkværksvej. During peak visitation periods and major public events, supplementary parking areas directly across the road can be brought into service. For visitors with reduced mobility holding a valid disabled parking permit, dedicated accessible parking spaces are reserved with the shortest possible physical distance to the site's main entrance and ticket sales office.
Are electric vehicle charging facilities available in the parking area?
Yes, four charging stations operated in collaboration with Clever are available in the parking area. Visitors arriving in electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles can monitor the real-time status of the chargers, connector types, and current tariffs via the Clever charging map or mobile application. This enables seamless charging while exploring the underground passages over a two-to-three-hour visit.
How is the site accessed via the road network and public transport?
Mønsted Kalkgruber is located at Kalkværksvej 8–10, 7850 Stoholm, in close proximity to Primary Route 16 between Viborg and Holstebro, making the site easily accessible by car. Visitors utilizing public transit should note that direct service to the entrance is not available; however, several well-connected travel options exist:
- Bus: Midttrafik route 28 operates from Viborg to Mønsted Kro. From this bus stop, the remaining distance to the limestone mines is approximately 2.5 kilometers on foot.
- Train: Passengers can travel via GoCollective regional rail services to either Stoholm Station or Sparkær Station, continuing the journey by bicycle through the surrounding Central Jutland landscape.
- Hiking: The mines serve as a key point of interest along the popular regional hiking route, Kalkkaminoen. Consequently, a visit to Mønsted can easily be combined with a scenic 5-kilometer walk to the neighboring Daubjerg Kalkgruber.
What accessibility standards apply across the site?
Following a comprehensive infrastructure development project conducted in partnership with the philanthropic association Realdania, Mønsted Kalkgruber has been systematically designed to ensure equal access for all visitors. The site holds official accessibility certification and registration on GodAdgang.dk, guaranteeing verified accessibility standards for wheelchair users, individuals with walking difficulties, and families with strollers. Key accessibility provisions include:
- Paved concrete pathways: Wide, level concrete paths extend throughout the outdoor grounds and inside the limestone mines. Visitors should note, however, that the exit pathway from the mines follows an incline; taking a measured pace or being accompanied by an assistant is recommended.
- Accessible restroom facilities: Modern, fully accessible restrooms are located adjacent to the ticket office, inside the historic Lime Plant (Kalkværket), and at Café Kridthuset.
- Wheelchair loan service: Three wheelchairs are available for loan free of charge at the ticket office. These cannot be reserved in advance and are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Companion pass policy: Official companion passes (Ledsagerkort) are accepted, granting complimentary admission for an accompanying carer or assistant.
